Dear Brushy Creek MUD Residents,
This spring, the District will launch a new initiative aimed at improving the long-term health of the Community Park Greenbelt, which will be another way we are showcasing The Brushy Creek Life and the care residents take in our shared spaces.
On a trial basis beginning in Spring 2026, invasive plant species will be removed along select trails within the Community Park Greenbelt. The effort was sparked by a District resident who brought the issue to our attention and will be led by that resident alongside a dedicated team of volunteers, with support from District staff.
The list of invasive species targeted for removal includes:
- Glossy Privet (Ligustrum lucidum)
- Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina domestica)
- Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia)
- Chinese Pistache (Pistachia chinensis)
- Quihoui Privet (Ligustrum quihoui)
- Chinaberry (Melia azedarach)
- Japanese Honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica)
- Johnson Grass (Sorghum halepense) *
- Common lantana (lantana x strigocamara) *
- Maltese star thistle (Centaurea melitensis) *
- Hedge Parsley (Torilis arvensis) *
- White mulberry (Morus alba) *
- Bermuda grass / King ranch bluestem*
- Chinese tallow *
Invasive species are known to crowd out native plants and disrupt healthy ecosystems. This project focuses on removing small, invasive plants such as saplings and undergrowth, as well as tagging certain invasive trees, specifically female trees, for potential removal.
No tagged trees will be near residential property, and professional arborists will be engaged if larger flora must be removed. Volunteers will also help replant native species to support a healthier, more balanced biome while preserving the greenbelt’s existing look and feel.
All trails will remain open throughout the project, though residents may notice increased foot traffic on scheduled cleanup days. Additional details, including photos and timelines, will be shared as the initiative moves forward.
We appreciate the community involvement that makes projects like this possible and look forward to sharing progress along the way.
